Trump's Attack On Elections Is Failing
Donald Trump is failing to convince the American people that elections are not free and fair, but Americans are worried about having easy access to voting than people voting illegally.
Donald Trump has been trying to delegitimize elections in the United States since he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, partially because Trump carries around that loss and the label of a president who failed to win a second consecutive term, but also because democracy is a guardrail and a check on the current president’s power.
Trump has been relentless in his attacks, and his desperation has only grown as it appears that his second administration is about to be drained of its power if Democrats win the midterm election.
For all his bluster about having unilateral power, the reality is that Donald Trump hasn’t taken any power but has had it gifted to him by House and Senate Republican leadership, which decided that the Legislative Branch would not serve as a coequal branch of government during the second Trump administration.
The good news for people who care about democracy and government is that the American people appear poised to check Trump.
The latest Marist Poll found:
If this year’s congressional midterm elections were held today, 53% of registered voters nationally say they would support the Democratic candidate on the ballot in their district while 44% would support the Republican candidate. Two percent say they would support another candidate, and 1% is unsure.
Trump is attacking elections and, by extension, democracy, because it looks like he is about to lose the midterm election.
The question is, are Trump’s attacks working?
