We haven't had a governor here in Texas that was worth a shit since the late, great Ann Richards. Damn, but I miss that woman. She was imbued with honesty and integrity. We've had nothing since but dunderheads, clowns, cheats and cowards (I'm pointing my finger at you, Abbott).
Bruce, I miss her too! Ann Richards was the best. So smart and personable and funny! A kick-ass gal who defied all the odds in a misogynistic state. And she raised a wonderful daughter, Cecile Richards, who was an amazingly courageous activist and served as President of Planned Parenthood.
I highly recommend Cecile’s fascinating memoir, Make Trouble. She chronicles her life growing up in Texas with a famous (notorious?) mom. It’s chock-full of funny stories about Ann and her years in Texas politics. A must-read!
I grew up in Texas (Houston and Austin) and moved away in 1982. Wish I had lived there during Ann’s tenure as governor. It’s profoundly unfair that she was cheated out of a second term by (you guessed it), a good ol’ boy.
I also miss Ann’s dear friend, Molly Ivins. Another brassy Texas dame who left us way too soon. Rest in power, Ann, Cecile and Molly! 😇
I'm so glad you reminded me about Molly Ivins. You could hear a collective sigh of relief from the GOP when she passed, especially here in Texas. I read both of her books about George W. She was relentless about letting readers know how useless he was. The fact that her articles and books were "fact-based" gave the Republicans no place to hide.
Yes indeed! 💗 She was an amazing woman and an ass-kicking journalist. I read her excellent books years ago (love the way she skewered Shrub!) and recently got her biography (Molly Ivins, by Bill Minutaglio and W. Michael Smith, 2009). Cannot wait to dig in. RIP Molly!
Gov. Abbot and his entire corrupt Texas government is unashamedly NAZI-like in his beliefs and actions. I hope Texans will defy him by attending the No Kings rallies - an extreme act of courage in a state where officials have a pronounced hatred and disdain for the residents of Texas.
The other Democrat in my office suggested taking bunches of flowers to the protests to give to the National Guard and police. I'm going to bring our big American flag. instead of making an F**k Taco sign
The whole situation is dreadful and disgusting…. but we must stay determined to defend our democracy…. get out and peacefully march against tyranny…. NO KINGS!!!
The final cut in the skin of our Democracy will happen when one of these military encounters results in the military firing on American citizens. Why is Trump and his hand-picked followers not being arrested for insurrection? It's happening. We're living it.

The Rs controlling the state legislature here in NC are just as despicable as Greg Abbott, and the Dem governor can halt a lot of their harmful bills if they don't have a supermajority.
Former state House leader (now Congressman) Tim Moore, current pipsqueak House leader Destin Hall and current state Senate leader Phil Berger have done a LOT of damage to our state since they flipped control in 2010 and promptly gerrymandered it to GOP control.
I am a 74 yr old woman who WILL be participating in the NoKings march this coming Saturday. Abbott does not represent my feelings about being a Texan. Our "great state" has been diminished greatly under his "rule as King of Texas". Abbott and his cronies I hope will be run out of our state in the next elections.
