Chaos In The House As Republicans Are Blocking ICE Funding
Mike Johnson can afford to lose one vote on the ICE CR, but right now the speaker is being forced to keep the vote open because one Republican is threatening to sink the whole thing.
The reason I have mentioned frequently in this space that Mike Johnson can only afford to lose one Republican vote on any legislation is that Johnson and the House Republican majority are hanging on by a single thread that could snap at any time.
The problem started when Donald Trump tried to get all of the House Republicans to vote for the CR by promising them that the Senate Republicans would reform the filibuster, so that it would have a better chance of getting to a final vote in the Senate.
Trump made this promise without discussing it with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), who said when asked about Trump’s promise that the Senate has no plans to change the filibuster rules, which means that Trump lied to get the votes that he needed, or so he thought.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) was already a no on the vote, but Rep. John Rose (R-TN) is holding up the rule from passing.
Rep. Rose posted on X:
LeaderJohnThune is already backtracking on what he reportedly told some House Republicans: that if we reopened the government, he’d keep his word and bring the SAVE Act to the floor. House Republicans MUST hold the line and refuse to fold on something as fundamental as election integrity. The SAVE Act belongs on must-pass legislation.
As expected, Johnson managed to flip a vote and get to the final vote, be he’s got issues.
Mike Johnson has a big problem, as we will discuss below.
