The House GOP Majority Is Almost Gone Thanks To Another Democratic Special Election Victory
Two Democrats were running in the US House Texas special election, but victor Christian Menefee is flying to Washington, DC, and will be sworn in on Monday, which further endangers the GOP majority.
Democrats are rolling up victories all across the country, but the one that will matter most for national politics isn’t the Texas state senate victory, but the win by Christian Menefee in a special election to fill the seat that was opened up by Democrat Sylvester Turner died in March of 2025.
Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee was the longtime holder of the seat, but she passed away while in office in 2024. Turner was elected to serve the next full term, but he passed away after only two months in office. Instead of immediately calling a special election, Gov. Greg Abbott left the seat open since last March.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett said that Menefee will be flying to Washington, DC with her to be immediately sworn in.
Crockett posted on X:
I already told him, he’s flying back to DC with me tomorrow so Speaker Johnson can conduct his swearing-in expeditiously.
Punchbowl News’s Jake Sherman said that Speaker Johnson plans to swear in Menefee on Monday.
Sherman posted on X:
SpeakerJohnson is expected swear in CDMenefee tomorrow provided the paperwork from Texas arrives in time. This will cut Johnson’s vote margin to one vote.
The nightmare scenario for the GOP, where Republicans could lose the House majority before the midterm election, is getting closer to unfolding.
