Kevin McCarthy Puts Coup Supporters In Charge Of Homeland Security Oversight

Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) had his phone seized by the FBI and is under criminal investigation as part of the plot to overturn the 2020 election. Before she even took office, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) participated in a Trump strategy session about overturning the election. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) supported the coup and promoted violent rhetoric and conspiracy theories.

All three extremists were given seats on the House Homeland Security Committee.

Biden White House spokesperson Ian Sams pointed out that Speaker McCarthy turned over oversight of those who monitor and seek to prevent domestic terrorist attacks to representatives who support violent rhetoric and dangerous conspiracies:

The coup plotters now have the power to question and meddle in the activities of Homeland Security to prevent domestic terrorism.

Kevin McCarthy does need to reveal why he took this step, but the answer is obvious. The far-right demanded Homeland Security seats as part of any deal to make him the Speaker of the House.

The Biden administration is off to a solid and forceful start in calling out these alleged domestic terror plotters and sympathizers, but the American people also play an important role in stopping them from damaging democracy.
