The idea of Trump paying his debts is ludicrous; he only cares about what he gets. He owes the coal miners safety but will never pay for it. As a retired MD who went to UPitt Med Sch, i can testify that terminal black lung disease is a horrendous way to die. And, Trump doesn't give a gold plated shit for the pain of others.

I live in Va and West Va is beautiful but extremely sad to drive through. WV needs help in so many ways and Trump lied, lied and lied again. We can’t blame the victims!

Good. I’m glad that voters, counties, and states that voted for Trump are now suffering. They are getting exactly what they deserve. Elections have consequences.

They voted for him. I do have compassion for their suffering, but let’s be clear, they are not victims. They made their choice, and their confirmation bias dictated that choice, so they must face the folly of it or they will continue to suffer. Who and what will they vote for now? It is in their hands, not anyone else’s.

The “victims” were told over and over by rumpy himself what would transpire. The Democrats told them, but they were so wrapped up in the cult and the joy of “owning the libs,” whatever that means, that they wanted to put the sexual predator/adjudicated rapist lying conman in office. I am sorry for their suffering but this is what they voted for.

I would discuss or feel bad/ but facts are knowable- no republican administration in 40 plus years has voted for anything that benefits humans. none of them.

Plus look at trumps handling of COVID- no leadership no responsibility, telling people to inject bleach- no national response because hey people dying are not his problem.

Nothing the man has ever done screams hey yeah I am gonna make sure your taken care of.

No but a lot of scared coal miners did. A lot of construction workers did a bunch of religious mawmaws and pawapaws did.

Again blame is on us not really addressing the issues and letting republicans dictate the narrative.

We are too busy defending Trans rights to starving people.

Too busy worrying about Gaza than are you ok Mr and Mrs Wv.

Expand full comment
nancy moynihan's avatar

All of that is media driven. Saying the people is simply not accurate. Very few people ever get to say what they support. People don't need to defend trans rights because trans people do not threaten them. The thugs made it up and sold it to people who want others to hate and be afraid of. And Gaza is a genocide in action executed by the IDF at the direction of Bebe the Murderer.

I do not blame democrats

I do not blame WVians

I do not blame the preachers

I blame us all. The collective. We have been complacent about voting for decades. And you can’t say we haven’t. 25-35% voter turnout out!!! Bullshit!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have always tried to get people to vote. I once hitchhiked 25 miles so I could vote and then go back for work. No lie.

The “Your vote don’t count” slogan worked very fucking well in this state. All the corruption in the 40-50-60’s

And Politicians have done nothing to correct it on a national and local level. This election more people didn’t vote than voted.

Feel free to Correct me if I’m wrong. If you’ve been in WV your whole life you know these things to be true.

Ok. I call them out on a daily basis, but the democrats do nothing to head off problems.

Republicans beat us over the head with abortion and 2nd amendment for years. Only when Dems started addressing those issues head on did it lose its power.

Next came African-American. They beat us up with that. Reagan wedding the republicans with Christianity making Dems devil lovers.

Now they use the trans scare.

Meanwhile, Dems avoid the issues and Republicans again dictate the agenda for the next election cycle.

Let’s discuss

Is it that dems avoid or is it that they just do not tell blatant lies to make their case. Rethugs are dirty fighters who know how to market the thug in chief. They have worked for decades to engineer Project 25. Dems screamed and yelled and the donnie voters said ho hum.

Patrick in principle I agree. The flaw here is that the soul searching is one-sided because rethugs know nothing about introspection, self-reflection or even second thoughts about donnie. I have initiated convos with 32 separate republicans, all of which ended badly due to my having to call out lying, denying, blame shifting, what about shifts and just plain political obstinance. I gave up. We no longer exist "as a country". We are a country fatally divided. It won't end well.

There is indeed much good left to fight for. The world is full of good people doing good things that benefit themselves and others. Nature is good. The sun never says to the earth you owe me. The reality is that in much of this world the good people are not in power. The rather mentally ill, wealthy white men are the ones in power. They are sick and they are not good. They have armies and what not. And yes, the dems have a problem with decorum, laziness, expecting others to share our value just because we hold them. I am honest so they are also honest kind of mistake. We need to be assertive, loud, demanding and even combative. Now. Early and often. Relentlessly.in their face. If only.

I am also a lifelong Democrat who lives in WV! This state is suffering and getting worse especially now when we have Trump's minions for governor and a fire red legislature. But until you have traveled the hills and holders of this beautiful state, lived in areas without potable drinking water, put your child on a school bus for a 2 hour ride to school, or just witnessed the abject poverty and hopelessnes of the population, to those who criticize? Have you offered any assistance or does it make you feel better to just sit back and criticize a place where areas have no internet, only dirt roads, and not much access to national news? Is the criticism a star in your crown? Don't judge and show some empathy.

Patrick's avatar

I judge no one. And yes there is poverty and hardship but mostly ignorance. Not knowing is exactly what republicans want. But it’s not just here it’s a nation wide ignorance campaign. I love my state. I love the people. The people here have one thing most people don’t, we know where we are going to buried.

Thank you for being a democrat in WV, it must be difficult. Sometimes(place) I feel alone in a blue state. But I’m struggling with the empathy part of this … the purpose of voting is to elect change , and the people have the ability to elect their own change, but have consistently elected to choose their own circumstances by always voting for the same party, with the same results. If residents of WV (& red states in gen) want change it needs to come from them first. They have the power to change their outcome.

A heavily Democratic that put John Kennedy over the top and gave him the presidency. And then mines were bought by men who didn't care and mining got more dangerous, jobs were getting fewer, black lung was rampant. Businesses close, no doctors, fewer teachers, towns are dying. So what do you do? You believe the lies of the coming prosperity big stotrs, beer schools, more doctors and hospitals. And you believe it because you want to and need to. So here we are. Things aren't better? It's his fault. So yeah. Here we are. Walk in peace my friend. I believe we can make it better. For all of us.

One thing that blue collar Republican voters have done for decades is voting against their own best self interests. I've tried repeatedly to explain (with facts) to my family members who are trumpers and they don't want to hear it. They believe EVERYTHING Trump tells them, not to mention the garbage they hear from Sean Hannity and other right-wing media trash. As I've said many times, trumpism is a disease with a low cure rate.

From a purely intellectual standpoint, you may well be right. And I too am an inveterate Trump loather and not anywhere on their side politically.

But I can’t take that attitude with respect to the people themselves, especially when many of them are suffering and dying because they are the ones who procure the energy that makes our lives better.

You don’t have to agree with them. But you can still give them some love and some compassion.

I remember when conservatives referred to lefties as “bleeding heart liberals.” I was one of those conservatives. Now I’m more inclined to think it’s better to have a bleeding heart than no heart at all.

Some wonderful day, Trump, the American nightmare, will be gone. But we Americans will still have to keep on living with each other. We shouldn’t make doing that any harder than it already is.

I don’t want to say this is what they get, I want to say because I know West Virginia and Southwestern Pennsylvania the Orange Felon spoke there language and you ask what do you mean , a lot of them barely got out of high school and there only means of getting to the middle class was the coal mines. So that’s what happened and yes I have witnessed coal miners dying of black lungs in the 50and60’s before the government got serious about the disease. And Trump promise them jobs in the mines but now they are mostly automated and they don’t need people. So they will feel the pain in more ways than one.
