At Biden’s Press Conference, Media Fantasy Met Reality

After an endless outcry by the media over President Joe Biden not holding press conferences, the President took questions for more than an hour. He made one verbal mistake: he confused Vice President Harris and Trump’s names when discussing Harris and Trump. Otherwise, by my count and the transcript, Biden was flawless.

You wouldn’t know it from the reaction of the media after the press conference.

Rachel Maddow, the face of MSNBC, the supposed left-leaning network, said before she complimented Biden’s policy knowledge:

We are all watching his performance but he did also break news on domestic politics talking about, saying that the delegates to the democratic convention are free to vote their conscience. Saying it like it is obvious, that is not necessarily obvious. And the president laying down at the end of the remarks what it would take for him to leave the race. He would leave the race if his advisories came to him and showed him the data that there was no way you could win. Meaning there is no way that he, President Biden, would win, and he said no poll says that. He is establishing that as the threshold that would be need to be crossed if he was going to leave. And I won't go on at length I will just say you noted there were moments of startlingly impressive command of the issues.”

It doesn’t matter even to Rachel Maddow that Biden demonstrated his capability to be president. No, even Rachel Maddow ignored Biden’s repeated statements that he would not leave the race to focus on the possibility of him stepping aside.

The rest of the MSNBC hosts on the panel followed along and tried to find ways to make Biden’s press conference fit their Democratic crisis narrative. The press is married to the Biden in crisis storyline, and not even corporate-branded left MSNBC would let it go.

The media has its Biden narrative, but the problem is that voters aren’t buying it.
