There is something beautiful about America’s system of checks and balances when it works properly. After Donald Trump was elected in 2024 and was about to return to the White House, many Americans were concerned that Trump would dismantle democracy, and the system of checks and balances would crumble.

Words like fascism and dictator were being used by critics and allies alike to describe what could be coming to the United States. Big corporations, media companies, billionaires, and CEOs all went to Mar-a-Lago to bend the knee in the hope of avoiding the wrath of Trump.

It was a dark time.

Even though the Republican majority in the House and Senate surrendered the power of the legislature as a coequal branch of government voluntarily to the president, Donald Trump was still not an all-powerful authoritarian.

Six of the nine justices on the Supreme Court were willing to act as Trump’s rubber stamp much more often than not, but unilateral power still escaped this president.

There has been one check that has not bowed to Trump.

The court system has consistently stood up to this president and shut down his effort to make voting more difficult and undermine democracy.

When Trump came into office, he signed an executive order imposing a citizenship requirement on voting, but on Wednesday, that executive order was permanently blocked.
