New York Special Election Loss Has Trump’s Fingerprints All Over It
The special election to fill the House seat formerly occupied by George Santos turned into another special election disaster for Republicans. The GOP filled the media with chatter about how New York’s third congressional district had shifted in their direction, and President Biden’s eight-point victory over Donald Trump in 2020 wasn’t indicative of where the district is now. Polling (LOL) had Democrat Tom Suozzi in a dead heat with Republican Mazi Pilip. The media claimed that this would be a close election, and could be a bellwether of Biden and Democratic weakness.
What happened?
Democrat Tom Souzzi matched Biden’s 2020 performance and won by eight points, 54%-46%.
At first blush, the loss was a local election in a snowstorm that might not tell us much, but reporters who talked to voters in the district came away with a definite culprit for the GOP loss.
For example, CNN’s Dana Bash reported:
I heard from voters that they were very, now these are obviously very well informed voters, but they were, they were at the polling station, they were voting early, and several of them said to me that they don't want to vote for the Republican because it's clearly impossible to get a solution on the issue of immigration, they said border.
The border problem, the immigration issue the migrant issue in their district was a top issue for them. And that the fact that Republicans killed that bipartisan deal put them over the edge to vote for Tom Suozzi. And immigration was their top issue. So I think that there's something there.

Donald Trump sabotaged the bipartisan border bill, and voters in NY-03 were paying attention.
As I wrote in my piece about the takeaways from the election, Republicans have been telling their voters that the border is a crisis and then refused to do anything about it because Trump told them not to.
Trump immediately threw Pilip under the bus and tried to distance himself from the loss, but as we will discuss below, he is to blame.
