There are clear signs pointing to the Department of Justice moving quickly to charge Trump in the classified documents case. Attorney General Garland named a Special Counsel, but he added Jack Smith to existing investigations. Smith is not starting fresh and beginning a new investigation. He is joining investigations that are already in progress.
It looks like Garland wants a decision to be made on Trump quickly before the 2024 presidential campaign kicks into gear.
Former Mueller prosecutor Andrew Weissmann tweeted:
Weissmann is correct. The clock is ticking. The political circumstances surrounding charging Trump only become more complicated if the investigation drags into the Republican presidential primary.
An Ongoing Investigation Could Benefit Trump In The GOP Primary
An ongoing DOJ investigation of Trump during the primary could be viewed as giving Trump an unfair primary advantage with Republican voters, as the former president will be able to play the victim and argue that he should be nominated because the Justice Department is out to get him.
