Trump’s Lawyer Says Ex-President Could Be Locked Up For The Republican Convention
Even though Donald Trump has no prior criminal record, and he is 77 years old, Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, did not rule out the possibility that his client will spend the Republican convention where he is set to become the party’s presidential nominee, behind bars.
Blanche said Trump and his team will fight the conviction "all the way to whatever court will finally right this wrong," and did not rule out a possible petition for a review by the Supreme Court.
He conceded "it's possible" that Trump could be behind bars during the convention if the judge imposes jail or prison time and declines to pause the sentence as the appeals process plays out.
"If there is a sentence of incarceration, and how that is carried out and when it's carried out — I expect that we would ask for a stay of any sentence while the appellate process works its way through the courts," Blanche said. "That's discretionary. That's not something that has to be granted. So that's something that I don't want to think about. I don't think it's going to happen. But it's possible, of course."
Two factors have made it not a forgone conclusion that Trump won’t see the inside of a jail cell. Even the most bullish of observers of the Trump case did not expect that the ex-president would be found guilty on all 34 counts.
The other point that Judge Merchan will consider in sentencing is that Trump had violated the gag order imposed on him numerous times, including on Friday morning when he attacked members of the court and witnesses like Michael Cohen. Trump has shown no remorse and his continued contempt for the court could get him locked up.
As we will discuss below, getting locked up could be the worst thing that could happen to the Republican convention.
