Conservative activist and Turning Points USA co-founder Charlie Kirk has reportedly been shot at a campus event in Utah.
Scott Trotter, the senior director of Public Relations at Utah Valley University in Orem, told the BBC, "a single shot rang out in the quad near the food court on the Utah Valley University Orem Campus as Mr. Charlie Kirk began speaking at his planned rally."
"A shot was fired from a nearby building and we have a suspect in custody," Reuters reported a a university spokesperson told them via email.
Kirk's spokesperson was reported by Fox News as saying, "Charlie Kirk has been shot at Utah Valley University. Condition unknown." They added, “Video posted from the event appeared to show Kirk being shot as he spoke to the crowd from under a white pop-up tent.”
Trump posted on his social media platform, “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!"
People are “outraged,” Fox News reported.
Americans, who have been pushing for some form of gun control for over a decade, might be surprised to see Republicans suddenly concerned about gun violence when it hits one of their own.
Kirk himself said in 2023, “It’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment.”
Utah is a red state that votes predominantly Republican, which is noteworthy in this moment as Trump has painted blue cities run by Democrats as crime bastions, while he took funding away from their gun violence prevention programs.
Unlike when Democrats have been shot and even killed, Democratic leaders like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries immediately condemned acts of political violence.
The top Democrat in the House, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., similarly condemned the violence.
"Political violence is NEVER acceptable. My thoughts and prayers are with Charlie Kirk and his family," Jeffries wrote in a statement.
“The attack on Charlie Kirk is disgusting, vile, and reprehensible. In the United States of America, we must reject political violence in EVERY form,” Newsom wrote on X.
Political violence should not be tolerated by any side and also, children’s lives are as important as Charlie Kirk’s life, and their safety at school should be a priority. This is why we need gun control measures, even though they won’t fix everything and won’t stop every shooting, they are still worth passing to save even one child’s life.
This is a breaking news event and details may emerge later that change current reporting.

“I think it's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights,” Charlie Kirk said in 2023.
Thoughts and prayers. That's more than Trump and Republicans gave the child victims in Minneapolis.
Karma??
