The Trump Double Standard Is Undermining The Nation
For a nation that was supposed to be founded on equality, the country has never been equal. Consider that only rich white men defined equality at the founding of the nation. Since our founding, there have been people who have not been treated equally. For example, women, non-white individuals who were literally enslaved, and those without wealth or property.
That inequality was even in the Constitution for a time, but never has the nation had a double standard specifically applied to only one person, but that is where we find ourselves currently.
The Trump double standard showed itself in how the bar was lowered for him during his first presidential election. Trump bragged about sexual assault on tape and was given a free press from the Republican Party and the media.
This double standard continued through his first presidential term, where behavior that would have been career-ending for any other president was met with a collective shrug. For example, inciting a violent insurrection in an effort to overthrow the government after losing his reelection bid.
Given this precedent, it should not have been surprising that when he was alleged to have committed multiple felonies federally and at the state level, Donald Trump was given more special treatment until the criminal cases evaporated.
The Trump double standard has become so entrenched that it is undermining the country in numerous ways, and the American people need to say no more.
