The Italian press called Trump’s attack on the Pope “shocking”. They wouldn’t be so shocked if they’d been paying attention to how he treats his own citizens, but this is a critical wake-up call for the world. Trump is, as he was called by a former Italian Prime Minister, a destroyer.

He cannot be left in charge of the “free world” without further damage.

Italian Media Condemned Trump

Italian media widely condemned Trump’s attack on the Pope, noting that 66% of Italians holding a negative view of Trump.

The Pope leads a 1.4 billion member church.

For context, Trump attacked the Pope as the pontiff set off for the first-ever papal visit to the Muslim-majority North African nation, starting an 11-day, four-nation Africa tour focused on fostering Christian-Muslim dialogue.

DIALOGUE.

Some call it diplomacy. Others call it intelligent.

It’s something the US president doesn’t understand and does not respect, because he operates like a mafia bully with the short attention span, vindictiveness and limited intellect of a petulant, Oppositional Defiant Disorder-plagued third grader.

The world is shocked.

France 24’s correspondent in Italy Seema Gupta detailed the widespread condemnation:

Well, here in Italy, as you can imagine, across the board, political as well as church leaders really condemning it. And the story, of course, was the top story in all the bulletins, and is also featuring in almost all the papers, La Repubblica, left leaning daily from Rome, talking about Trump and his insult to the Pope, saying the statements that were made are without any precedent, just the error of the White House. It says confusing faith with power.

And then we have the Milan base Corriere della Sera also talking about Trump's shocking attack on Pope Leo the 14th, and the condemnation from politicians with Miss Meloni, saying that Trump's words and statements are unacceptable.

Then you have the Turing base daily putting this juxtaposition of the two images talking about the Schism of Trump. You have the image of Pope Leo speaking in Algeria, and then the AI image that Donald Trump posted, showing himself to be what many have said is a Jesus like image.

The Rome based daily In Massagero, also leading with the insult to Pope Leo. And then finally, you have the Italian Bishops Conference paper Avvenire, talking about the gospel and with a high voice and saying that there's an it's necessary. The Pope responding to Trump saying, I will not be afraid. I'm not afraid of the Trump administration.

And an editorial talking about those who fear peace. So really, across the board in the media, that very strong reaction, and you know, one has to wonder about Miss Meloni herself, who has in the past cultivated a close relationship to Mr. Trump. But of course, in this instance, having to have a very rare rebuke of Mr. Trump and the statements he made, perhaps also realizing that some 66% of Italians have a negative view of the US president.

Politicians Speak Out

Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called Trump a “destroyer of relationships and of civilization” on X, as reported by Detroit Catholic:

“Defending Pope Leo XIV is today a duty not only for Catholics but also -- and above all -- for secular people. It has been centuries since such blatant aggression toward the Roman Pontiff has been seen. He is, in fact, a ‘builder of bridges,’ unlike Donald Trump, a destroyer of relationships and of civilization.”

“The only advantage: Trumps come and go, popes remain. But is there none among the many Italians who waved the MAGA cap who has the courage to say: ‘The White House’s attack on the Vatican is simply shameful’?”

Even Trump ally conservative Catholic Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has finally managed to eek out the mildest of criticism calling his remarks “unacceptable.”

“The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, and it is right and normal for him to call for peace and to condemn every form of war,” Meloni’s statement read.

Fortunately, the Pope seems to have more courage than the Prime Minister.
