As Trump continues to push his party to give him a 4th of July moment of signing legislation that cuts taxes the most for the wealthiest Americans, while harming everyone else, it is obvious that what the president is leading his party to do in a rushed fashion is a terrible idea.
It has become a common feature of American policymaking that when one party controls both Congress and the presidency, it often gets bogged down and becomes its own worst enemy.
During the Biden administration, it can be argued that Democrats lost momentum with the Build Back Better legislation, which became bogged down, watered down, and ultimately vaporized due to the opposition of a few Democratic senators.
The first Trump administration is more remembered legislatively for wasting an epic amount of time trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and rushing through the Trump tax cuts legislation in such a closed door half-baked manor that Republicans had to spend more fixing what they screwed up after the legislation became law.
Republicans have been working on the current budget bill since they assumed control of Congress nearly six months ago, which is two months longer than it took Democrats to pass the Affordable Care Act in 2009-2010.
The problem that Republicans are facing is that at a time when the vast majority of Americans are demanding something be done about costs and inflation, Trump and his party are putting together a massive piece of legislation that doesn’t address the top concerns of people, and will make the cost and inflation situations worse.
If Democrats have the problem of thinking that the American people are paying more attention than they are, Republicans assume that the American people are not paying attention at all.
When it comes to the current budget bill, the American people are paying attention, and they don’t like what they are seeing.
