There is common driver of both Trump and the jailed 1/6 insurrectionists, and that is entitlement.

Our nation is at a critical point, real news and analysis matter. We are fighting for democracy and to be a voice of the people, but we could use your support. Please consider liking, sharing, and subscribing to this newsletter.

“What I Saw Was A Group Of Very Privileged Individuals”

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) described what she saw when she toured the DC jail where the 1/6 insurrectionists are being held on MSNBC’s The Saturday Show with Jonathan Capehart:

Rep. Crockett said, “What I saw was a group of very privileged individuals that were being treated so much more better than any prisoner that I've ever dealt with, and I've been doing criminal defense work and civil rights work for almost two decades. So I think that it's a matter of when you want to see, and honestly, this trip was simply about having a conversation and continuing to build a defense for these folks that legitimately tried to tear our democracy apart. And they went in trying to kill colleagues of mine. “

Privilege is an accurate term for what these 1/6 attackers are feeling. They feel above the law and like they should not be in jail. The 1/6 insurrectionists are not being detained in a regular facility. They have iPads, 24-hour access to medical care, access to friends and family, and are separate from the general jail population.

These people who attacked our country are getting special treatment, yet they are still complaining.

The complaints aren’t being driven by injustice, but by the politics of entitlement.

MAGA Was Born Out Of Entitlement

Donald Trump’s political career was born out of a reaction by mostly white rural Americans to the election of Barack Obama as president. The entitled right hated Obama because he took what they thought belonged to them. Obama also represented the rise of the changing demographic tide of the nation.

President Barack Obama was a potential preview of the US’s future power structure, and that structure was not those who felt the most entitled.

Trump was politically launched by a racist attack on Obama’s birth certificate, but beneath the racism was a burning sense of entitlement. Obama had taken what they thought was theirs.

Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign was all about messaging that played into that sense of anger and entitlement. Trump was the perfect candidate for these people because he is the embodiment of their entitlement. Trump wasn’t mouthing talking points. His entire life has been an exercise of privilege and entitlement and knew exactly what to say to get entitled Americans who were angry and fearful of the election of the first black president mobilized.
