Donald Trump can’t handle hearing any bad news. The president has lived his adult life in a self-mythologized dis-reality bubble. In Trump’s bubble, he is a successful businessman, a great politician, and a great president. It doesn’t matter that Trump has failed in all three areas. Donald J. Trump was born rich, so he can always find people who will support his delusional mythology.

Trump isn’t living in reality, so when he makes statements about having an approval rating over 90%, ending inflation, or gas being $1.98 a gallon, he really believes it.

The president has surrounded himself with staff who do not give him bad news, and the only media he consistently consumes are outlets that sing his praises.

When what is likely more than 7 million people took to America’s streets in cities and small towns all across the country to protest HIM, it was the sort of event that punctures even the thickest disreality bubbles.

The message got through to Trump that he and his party aren’t popular and beloved. The policies aren’t working, and lots of Americans are ready to make a change.

As a political scientist and someone who has studied protest movements and their political impacts, I can tell you that anytime a political leader ignores loud and sustained public protest, they are setting themselves and their party up for disaster.

Successful leaders respond to the protests by adjusting their policies.

What Trump and his party are doing in response to No Kings is something that needs to be examined in greater detail, but it is going to have massive political impacts.
