Elections Are A Series Of Campaign Choices
Historically, presidential elections have been won and lost long before the first vote is cast. Campaigns make choices throughout the process, and like a choose-your-own-adventure game, each of those decisions opens up different paths. The campaign that makes the best decisions that are the most in touch with a majority of voters, or in this case, enough states to get 270 electoral college votes, wins.
The Kamala Harris campaign has been widely praised for running virtually flawlessly. However, with so little time, the campaign had to be flawless to win. A major scandal or slip-up could cause days of bad media coverage, which is time that the campaign would have never gotten back.
The Harris campaign has avoided all of that. In contrast, the Trump general election campaign since Butler has been an endless series of Trump and Vance stepping on rakes and hitting themselves in the face.
The media has criticized the Harris campaign for what they think is a lack of drama, but the lack of drama and scandal has been intentional. The campaign has focused on voter contact and not playing media games. Harris knows that elections are won by convincing voters to vote for you, not by media stunts.
It is a choice that has paid off big for the Harris campaign, as she entered the race with feverish grassroots enthusiasm that has never cooled. Harris draws bigger, louder, and more diverse crowds than Trump, and this outcome is the result of a choice. The Harris campaign chose to prioritize and reach out to those voters, while Donald Trump has solely focused on his base.
All of these choices matter, and if Harris wins, they will be looked back on as successful building blocks on the path to the White House, but other factors will help explain why Kamala Harris was successful if she wins.
Get Out The Vote
If VP Harris wins, her grassroots operation will be a big reason why. Harris and Biden built a massive get-out-the-vote operation. The original Biden-led ticket expected a close election, so they built a vast grassroots operation with thousands of field offices and campaign workers focused on voter contact and getting Democrats to the polls.
