After Texas Democrats left the state to deny Republicans in the state House a quorum so that they could not vote on their Trump-mandated gerrymandered map, the Democrats are promising to fight and do whatever it takes to protect the rights of Texas voters.

It speaks volumes about both the arrogance of Republicans and how little respect they have for Democrats, but Texas Democrats are ready to fight.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Kendall Scudder said:

Greg Abbott just told flood survivors across Texas that their suffering comes second to Donald Trump’s thirst for power. He’s holding disaster flood relief hostage to steal five congressional seats - because Trump said so. That’s not governing, that’s gutless. Your right to representation in your government is under attack, and Texas Democrats will protect your rights through any means necessary.

We’re backing our Democratic lawmakers who are fighting against Trump’s Texas Takeover nationwide. The Texas Democratic Party will do everything we can to support our lawmakers, fight back against this power grab, and ensure all voices are heard at the ballot box.

In the coming hours and days, there is likely to be a great deal of anger and hysteria directed at the Texas House Democrats from the White House and conservative media.

What Texas House Democrats are doing is not a crime. It is a civil offense in Texas, and while Republicans have promised to fine the missing Democrats, if they decide to issue warrants to bring them back to the state, it is unclear if the warrants would be enforceable because the Democrats haven’t committed a crime and have crossed state lines.

The base of the Democratic Party has been aching for a fight since Trump returned to the White House. The Texas House Democrats have just provided Democrats with what they have long wanted.
