In a sign of both the president’s declining power and the outrage over the killing of American citizens in Minnesota by DHS, Trump tried to bring some Senate Democrats to the White House to get enough votes to keep the government open, and it didn’t go well.
Trump administration officials attempted to bring several rank-and-file Democratic senators to the White House for a meeting on the looming government funding deadline on Wednesday, but Democrats declined the meeting, according to three sources familiar with the discussions and a senior White House official.
The attempt by the White House to backchannel with key Democrats comes as GOP leaders scramble to find a way to keep the government open after this Friday’s deadline — while quelling the national uproar over the federal law enforcement shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti on Saturday.
The senior White House official confirmed that the administration had sought conversations with some Democrats on funding but was rebuffed.
For clarification, rank-and-file senators are those who do not hold leadership or powerful committee positions.
