Senate Democrats Say They Are Losing Faith In Chuck Schumer
There are Democrats out there who are trying to sell the anger at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as strictly a left-driven outrage over a difficult decision that Schumer made, but instead of buying the spin, CNN talked to dozens of Democrats in the Senate, the House, and working in Congress and what they found was that Democratic voters are far from alone.
“This is not the first time that members of the caucus expressed frustration that he wasn’t as inclusive as he could have been on decision making or strategy, but the stakes of this particular vote were huge,” said one Senate Democrat, who like others, is still wary of going public with attacks on the leader.
But CNN’s conversations with three-dozen Democratic senators, members of the House, top aides and other prominent leaders detail a cratering of support, with many starting to feel that he can’t be the party’s future and shouldn’t be their present.
“If he doesn’t lose it between now and then, he won’t be leader in two years,” said another Democratic senator, who added, looking ahead to the next expected Congressional showdown, “he can’t be trusted alone to negotiate the debt limit.”
Democrats are saying that the government shutdown vote was a tough situation for them, but Schumer made it worse and caused them to take an even bigger loss than necessary.
Senate Democrats like Chuck Schumer as a person and a senator, and they recognize that this was not a great situation on the government shutdown vote, but they are starting to think that they need a change in leadership because Schumer might not be up to facing off with Trump 2.0.
