Republicans Have A Supreme Court Problem

At first, it must have felt like a dream come true for conservatives. Donald Trump transformed the Supreme Court into an ideologically driven far-right institution that was delivering on decades of conservative political promises.

The dream quickly turned into a nightmare.

The Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade set off a political firestorm of voter outrage that cut across party lines and immediately cost Republicans in election after election.

There were three main factors that motivated voters in 2022. The fight for democracy. The looming and unending presence of Donald Trump, and abortion. The first two points would have kept the 2022 midterm election close. The third point decided key races and killed what Republicans had convinced themselves would be a red wave.

The conservative Supreme Court followed up getting rid of the right to privacy for a majority of Americans by turning back the clock on education and sawing the rungs of the ladder of opportunity out from under non-white college students by overturning Affirmative Action.

Those same college students could face a double whammy if the court rules against President Biden’s student loan relief program on Friday.

The consequence of the rogue Supreme Court majority is that Republicans are dealing with a fired-up and growing segment of the electorate that could cost them again in 2024.
