Republicans thought that if they made air travel miserable at America's airports, Democrats would be blamed, and ICE would be funded. They got it completely wrong.

Republicans control the White House, the House, and the Senate. The fact that Democrats have been demanding reforms to ICE since the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis was well known to the GOP.

The federal system of governance in the United States is built on the concepts of compromise and consensus.

When one political party controls the federal government, it is its responsibility to compromise and build consensus to keep government services running for the people.

The American people expect that when they go to the airport to catch a flight, basic security services will function.

Republicans have refused to do their jobs. Instead of negotiating in good faith with Democrats who wanted reforms to ICE and border patrol, Republicans, led by their president, decided to play games and refuse to govern.

Trump has rejected and refused to make a deal with Democrats.

Instead, Republicans tried to hold air travelers hostage and place the blame on Democrats.

The plan was a complete failure.

Democrats didn’t break, and the long lines at airports began to dominate the headlines.

The Department of Homeland Security shutdown continues, but the media is still asking the wrong questions.
