Republicans Respond Poorly To Their Moment Of Crisis
Before Saturday evening, attention was still on President Biden and some members of his party who had a break with reality and were attempting to replace their nominee.
Just after 6 PM ET, that all changed as shots rang out at the Butler County, PA Fairgrounds as a would-be mass shooter opened fire on Trump and his rally. Police say that Trump was hit by broken glass, while Trump's allies claim that it was a bullet. Either way, Trump was targeted in an assassination attempt.
That a man who has built his political career on violent rhetoric, hate, and divisiveness would be targeted in an assassination attempt may have been one of the more predictable outcomes in American political history.
The old saying that you reap what you sow has never seemed more appropriate.
None of this is to say that political violence is ever justified. It is not. If someone has a problem with Donald Trump, the answer is not to take up arms but to take up the ballot.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the kneejerk Republican reaction was not to call for national calm and to see beyond politics.
The GOP's initial reaction was to claim that President Biden ordered Trump to be shot. Republicans blamed President Biden and called for him to be indicted. The GOP quickly showed the nation that they are the party of chaos and unhinged lunacy.
Republicans haven’t shown they can unite the country or are interested in doing so.
Remember the guy that Democrats were trying to toss out the door for having a lousy debate? The guy that some Democrats claimed was so old that he would doom the party to defeat if he stayed on the ticket?
Joe Biden, not Donald Trump or his party, has stepped up and taken control, and in the process, President Biden has shown that Republicans are unfit to govern.
