Republicans Get Wrecked After They Blame Democrats For Homeland Security Shutdown
Trump's war of choice in Iran has Republicans getting nervous because the Department of Homeland Security is shut down. When Republicans tried to blame Democrats for the shutdown, they got wrecked.
It feels like a million years, but it was just a matter of weeks ago that Trump and his party decided not to negotiate in good faith with Democrats about reforming ICE and funding the Department of Homeland Security.
Republicans seemed content to leave Homeland Security shuttered because they gave ICE a big pile of money in 2025, and immigration was their only concern.
There was no problem with anything on the Republican side until their president began bombing Iran and now the GOP is concerned because TSA agents aren’t getting paid, so security lines at airports are getting long, and if Iran does retailiate against the United States, DHS might not be up to the task of protecting the country, even though they exist to provide homeland security. It’s even in their name.
Republicans have started trying to blame Democrats for the DHS shutdown, but Democrats aren’t having it.
House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was asked by Kristen Welker on Meet The Press:
Congressman, there's a real concern that the Iran strikes may increase the terror risk here in the United States. Republican Congressman Mike Lawler of New York wrote this, quote, 'Given the situation in the Middle East and the potential for Iran and terrorist proxies to attempt some type of attack, it is imperative that Senator Schumer and Rep. Jeffries immediately drop all opposition to funding the Department of Homeland Security and pass the funding bill. What say you to that argument that this is about the safety and security of U.S. citizens?
Jeffries destroyed the Republican argument.
