Trump’s midterm Republican convention has been an unmitigated disaster for his party. The president is throwing a shindig for himself that is meant to celebrate his presidency, while oil and gasoline prices continue to rise and the economy grows more fragile.

Trump is an old dog with very limited tricks, which is why it wasn’t surprising when he said during his night one speech:
If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our economic, tremendous economic success, like in, in history, we've never had anything like what's happening, but because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.
Very much like a successful company will do a cash distribution to its shareholders or like last year when I gave our great members of the military $1,776. Remember?
Trump made this same promise in 2018, when he promised voters $2,000, but only if they voted for Republicans.
They didn’t vote for Republicans.
Trump returned to a version of this promise during the 2020 election, which he lost.
After he returned to the White House, Trump promised DOGE dividends that never happened.
We’ve seen this movie before, but this time many Republicans have responded to Trump by calling him a socialist.
