After 2016, Trump convinced the Republicans that remained in the party that MAGA was the way forward. They believed that he owned the Republican base so the only that they could stay in power was to yield to Trump.
Then the losses started.
Republicans lost the 2018 midterm, which they blamed on usual midterm outcomes for a first-term president. The GOP then lost the 2020 presidential election out of fear of Trump, they adopted his big lie that the election was stolen. 2022 was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Trump lorded over the party and they lost an election that they were expecting to win handily.
MAGA wasn’t the way, and MAGA candidates did worse with voters than regular Republicans.
People forget where the Republican Party was before Trump in 2016.
Seven or eight years ago, the only thing that Republicans agreed on was their contempt for Obama.
