Republicans could have stopped Trump anytime that they wanted. Republicans could have prevented their 2016 primary field from growing to an absurd two dozen candidates thus splitting the anti-Trump vote and allowing him to win with 30% support. Republicans could have rallied around one non-Trump candidate. When Democrats decided that it was time to nominate their best candidate, the party rallied around Joe Biden in 2020 and got the job done.
Republicans could have stopped Trump at their convention, but they chose not to. The GOP could have stopped Trump after the release of the Access Hollywood tape, but instead of condemning him and booting him out of the party, they rallied around Trump and looked the other way.
