Republicans Are Blowing It As They Follow Trump Off Arrest Cliff
Just like Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow, Republicans are guaranteeing themselves more losing by defending Trump.
As Republicans wade deeper into the anti-democracy stream of Trump criminality and chaos, your voice and support for this newsletter matter more than ever. If you are not a subscriber, please consider subscribing. You can also support us by liking, sharing, and spreading the word about our work.
Nothing Has Changed With Trump And The Republican Party
Republicans can’t quit Donald Trump. They have now gotten to the point where they know they will lose in 2024, but like an addict, they can’t break free.
However, suggesting that they are hostages in some form to Trump isn’t entirely accurate. It isn’t that they can’t break, but that many of them don’t want to.
No matter the motivation, the consequences of not breaking free from Trump are the same. Lots more losing.
Joe Scarborough put it this way on MSNBC’s Morning Joe:
Scarborough said, “He’s (Trump) only become more extreme. He’s only hating on America more. He’s only thrown in his lot with Vladimir Putin more, saying that he’s savvy and brilliant, and we need more of that here. So those voters that abandoned him in ‘20, they’re not going to go to him in 2024.”
Trump has provided zero motivation for anyone outside of his base and Republicans who will vote for any nominee with an (R) beside their name to support him.
Republicans have lost for six straight years with Trump.
The GOP has grumbled a lot about breaking free from Trump. Fox News has become a Ron DeSantis propaganda machine, but nothing has changed in the party dynamics.
Trump got into trouble, and Republicans came running to his defense.
The same pattern that has been prevalent since 2016 is at work again, and below, we will discuss what it means for Democrats and the country.
