Joe Biden Is Going To Be The Democratic Presidential Nominee

Anyone who is following politics right now, and if you subscribe to this newsletter, that is definitely the case, has seen outlets like Axios, Politico, and The New York Times float various theories about how President Biden could be replaced as the Democratic nominee.

The problem with all of the theories is that they are rooted in fiction. Part of the fiction comes from a portrayal of the presidential nominating process in movies and television. There hasn’t been a real convention fight in 44 years since Ted Kenedy and Jimmy Carter at the 1980 Democratic convention, which came down to a floor vote on a question relating to the ability of pledged delegates to vote for anyone they wanted for Carter to clinch the nomination.

The Cater/Kennedy brawl led to the creation of the superdelegates system in 1984, but there were still some issues between the Mondale and Hart campaigns that were settled on the convention floor.

Party conventions have become tightly scripted events because political parties want to avoid the divisive floor disputes that can play out on national television and tear a party apart.

MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell did a great job this week breaking down how none of the potential Biden replacements have raised any money, which means that if one of these fantasy replacements did become the Democratic nominee, they would have no campaign infrastructure and zero dollars.

It doesn’t take a political scientist to understand that going into a general election against Donald Trump with an unknown candidate who has no money or organization would be political suicide.

There is also another really important reason that Biden can’t be replaced that we will discuss below.
