Donald Trump told the country during the 2024 campaign that this was going to happen. It would take ICE years to hire enough agents to get up to the level of staffing that would be needed to carry out Trump’s goal of deporting 20 million people from the United States.
First, Trump insisted that he would recruit local enforcement to help deport immigrants, but most local law enforcement were uncertain to cooperate, so during the campaign, Trump suggested that he would use the military to round people up and deport them.
That seems to be exactly what Trump is doing.
The president is changing the purpose of the nation’s military and federal law enforcement, while using crime as a pretext to enter Democratic cities and terrorize residents.
Rachel Maddow discussed this repurposing of the military.

Maddow said:
You can look at the big picture and recognize that what's happening here might be quite important, particularly in the national security sphere, right? At the same time, the president is repurposing all federal law enforcement agencies and the U.S. Military into an armed force, in some cases, a masked armed force that patrols and polices and occupies U.S. Cities. He is simultaneously degrading the professional core of those entities, degrading the professional corps of federal law enforcement, the military, the intelligence agencies, and even emergency response. He is de-professionalizing the us military and federal law enforcement and federal emergency response while he is turning those kinds of forces against the American people on American soil.
And why would you do that? I mean, maybe somebody should ask him, although would you believe his answer? I can't say if this were happening in any other country, but we would know instinctively. Was that the reason a leader would do something like that is because that leader wants to use those forces differently than what they've been trained for, differently than what they've been used for before. A leader trying to professionalize. The sharp end of the spear. De-professionalizing law enforcement and the military does so because he wants to remove any professional restraint or internal ethics or culture that might otherwise hold those forces back from what he is now going to ask them to do.
The Trump administration has been shrewd by targeting majority minority with Democratic mayors.
Trump appears to want to keep white America in the dark about what his administration is doing, because white outrage will get people on the streets, and the mainstream media talking about it. The mainstream press is still dominated by white men, who are more likely to minimize a story and look the other way until those being targeted look like them.
Donald Trump is, at best, degrading the capacity and intelligence of agencies that are important to national security. At worst, he is committing the most significant attack on democracy from within in American history.

Rachel has said since Trump’s first term: watch what he does, not what he says. This statement is truer than ever before!!!
Trump is turning the U.S. military and law enforcement into his private militia. This will not turn out well.
