Ukraine Aid Passes And Shines A Light On The Putin Infected GOP
This is what we are up against America. After months of stalling, opposing, and foot-dragging, a bill was finally brought to the House floor and passed to aid the people of Ukraine, who are fighting to keep their democracy in the face of an invasion by autocrat Vladimir Putin and Russia.
In a not-too-long-ago time, legislation like this would have been viewed by Republicans as an easy policy win. Any Speaker of the House would have sprinted a bill to help a fellow democracy onto the House floor, where it would have gotten over 400 votes and been universally cheered.
The Republicans have erased their legacy of supporting democracy and reverted back to their most dangerous stance in nearly 100 years. A look back at the 1930s and how Republicans were influenced by Nazi propaganda shows the last time that Republicans behaved the way that they did today.
The fact is that the House Republican majority could not get a majority of the majority to support helping a democracy that was invaded by a dictator.
101 House Republicans voted for aid to Ukraine, but 112 voted against it.
In contrast, all 210 Democrats that were present in the House voted for aid to Ukraine.
One of the two major political parties in the United States is now on record in the only part of the federal government where they have power as opposing democracy.
Some may dice, spin, and cut this up for political narratives, but this is where we are as a country, a people, and a society.
