Politically Flaccid Trump Will Get No Help From Democrats

As American politics lurches toward its holiday slumber, there was a large development that given the first Trump presidency should not have been a surprise but for many it might have been.
House Republicans have been the bedrock of Trump’s support in Congress. During Trump’s first term, the threat of a primary caused members of the House Republican conference to quiver and get into line. When Trump successfully ousted former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), it was assumed that House Republicans would toe the Trump line.
Which is what makes what happened during the drama to keep the government funded and prevent a shutdown stand out.
The funding bill keeps the government open until March 14. Even though Republicans will control the White House, the House and the Senate, they’ll again need Democratic votes to stop a shutdown in less than three months.
In addition, Trump’s demand that Congress extend or abolish the debt ceiling to take it off his plate next year failed dramatically. On Wednesday, he threatened electoral primary challenges against “any Republican” who voted to fund the government without dealing with the debt limit.
Why did 170 House Republicans ignore Trump’s threat?
