The Second American Revolution
“Man is either governed by his own laws - freedom - or the laws of another - slavery. Are you willing to become slaves? Will you give up your freedom, your life and your property without a single struggle? No man has a right to rule over his fellow creatures.”
Alexander Hamilton
While America’s corporate-owned media complex has chosen to entertain itself to the point of distraction with endless debates about Joe Biden’s performance at the debate, America’s cold civil war has continued to rage on.
Ever since Republicans decided to opt out of democracy, a decision that wasn’t made over the course of weeks or months but has been a thought process that has advanced in conservative circles for decades, the United States has found itself in the midst of a civil war over democracy.
Voting rights advocates have been sounding the alarm about the conservative attack on voting since the early 2000s. One of the outcomes of the 2000 presidential election that is rarely discussed isn’t necessarily Florida or Bush v. Gore. It is that Republicans had their proof that making it more difficult or confusing for people to vote was a successful way to get and keep power.
Conservatives didn’t have to moderate their positions anymore to capture a majority of voters; they could focus their efforts on making the electorate look how they wanted it to, allowing them to seize power.
However, there was the question of what to do with power once it was achieved. Once the voting process had been corrupted, seizing power without the ability to use it unencumbered by checks and balances became the next step.
That next step is where we find ourselves on July 4th, 2024.
People often think that Donald Trump is the force behind the effort to install a king, but Trump is nothing more than the perfect tool. The far right needed a corrupt candidate who had no values, no loyalty to the country, and did not believe in democracy.
Donald Trump could be Ted Cruz, J.D. Vance, Mike Johnson, or many Republicans.
Trump is the embodiment of the threat today, but he is not the threat itself.
