Nancy Pelosi Sends A Message
Nancy Pelosi has attended 11 presidential inaugurations going back to John F. Kennedy when she was a student, but Rep. Pelosi won’t be attending Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will not attend President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, according to her spokesperson.
Pelosi notably attended Trump's inauguration in 2017, when she was the House Democratic leader.
A spokesman did not disclose a reason why the California Democrat is skipping the high-profile event.
Speaker Pelosi is someone who believes in institutions and American democratic values like the peaceful transfer of power to her core. Pelosi is not a firebrand or someone who needs to seek attention. Her status as one of the most successful speakers in the history of the country affords her plenty of attention.
It isn’t that Trump is a Republican. Pelosi didn’t see eye to eye with George W. Bush on significant issues but went to his inaugurations. Pelosi’s decision to spend January 20th elsewhere is a rebuke of Trump and, more importantly, the sort of administration that he is bringing to the White House.
To understand what Trump is ushering in, consider that there will likely be more billionaire tech bros and titans of tech corporations on the dias at Trump’s inauguration than ex-presidents. Musk, Zuckerberg, Tim Cook of Apple, and the CEO of TikTok are all expected to be on the dias with Trump on Monday.
This is not an administration of the people but a government of and for billionaires.
