Mike Johnson Tries To Save Matt Gaetz For Trump
As Kevin McCarthy tells the story, he lost his job as Speaker of the House because he would not interfere with the House Ethics Committee investigation of now-former Rep. Matt Gaetz. McCarthy has said publicly on numerous occasions that Gaetz was threatening his speakership as part of an effort to get McCarthy to end the House Ethics Committee investigation.
McCarthy wouldn’t end the investigation, so Gaetz ousted him from the speaker position.
Current Speaker Mike Johnson apparently has no such ethical questions about interfering with the non-partisan House Ethics Committee.
“I do not. No, I think it’s a terrible breach of protocol,” Johnson said when asked by reporters if he thinks the report should come out.
…
The speaker said he planned to talk to House Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest about the situation.
“I will talk to him and anybody else. I’m going to try to reach him. I’ve been a bit busy,” he said, noting he got back from Mar-a-Lago late last night.
Asked if he would respect the panel’s decision if the Ethics Committee chose to share the report with the Senate Judiciary Committee, Johnson replied, “I’m going to strongly request that the Ethics Committee not issue the report.”
“That is not the way we do things in the House, and I think that would be a terrible precedent,” he said.
This was always the game plan for Trump and Gaetz. Their defense was that since Gaetz is no longer a member of the House, the report can’t be released.
However, there has never been a speaker who attempted to interfere with the House Ethics Committee as Johnson is trying to do.
Speaker Johnson is acting in a corrupt manner, but lucky for the American people, Democrats were already ahead of Johnson.
