The anxiety from Democrats today has been off of the charts, which is good because it means that Democrats care.
In the elections that I have covered in my career where one party has gotten whacked or waved as they say today, the one common trait in the losing party was apathy. Before election day, the party that was about to lose was apathetic. The apathy showed up in the polls as the more motivated opponent waltzed to a big win.
2022 is looking like an unprecedented midterm election in that both parties are extremely motivated. Democratic turnout is high. Republican turnout is also high.
I would not try to extrapolate too much from exit polling because this could also be a year of split-ticket voting.
It might take a few days or a week to get all of the results in depending on potential legal challenges, but Republican voter intimidation efforts and new voter suppression laws appear not to have worked.
