The stories are everywhere right now as elite journalists grapple with the terror of their glittering, self-congratulatory dinner with a man attacking the American people and destroying freedom.

It turns out that having to face what American schoolchildren do is traumatizing. It also turns out that perhaps the reason they’ve been so blaze about the rest of the country losing their rights, freedom, and safety is that they felt protected by their proximity to “high-profile” people and elite status.

They are shocked that this could happen to them.

And now it is a problem.

“Saturday’s terrifying episode at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner is the latest sign that U.S. political violence is growing worse, with no event or appearance entirely safe, no matter how high-profile the attendees. The fallout from this shocking incident will reverberate throughout Washington and nationally,” Punchbowl reported.

It isn’t that we don’t have compassion for everyone in that room and the people who love them, and it isn’t that we aren’t glad they are all safe. The issue is the profound disconnect with what the rest of the country faces every day.

And these folks are supposed to be covering the people in power in a way that protects the public.

We can see the impact of the corruption of access journalism and tabloid style political coverage in this simple statement.
