It is important to understand what Republicans were expecting before Mamdani went to the White House to meet with Donald Trump.

Trump had set the expectations by criticizing Mamdani as a socialist threat to America, who was about to take over the nationโ€™s largest city. The president threatened to withhold federal aid to New York City and send ICE on an immigration spree there.

To understand what Republicans and the conservative movement thought they would be getting on Friday, the context of how the right is trying to define Trumpโ€™s second stint in the White House matters.

Trump and his allies have leaned heavily into Donald Trump being the new Ronald Reagan, and besides dementia, Ronald Reagan is most famous for fighting commies.

Donald Trump seems to be friends with all of the commies, past and present, so he and the right have decided that they are going to fight the scourge of socialism.

Fox News remains the best barometer of right-wing narratives and expectations, and this was how they were selling the meeting with Mamdani:

A showdown with socialism, baby.

Only it wasnโ€™t a showdown. It was Mamdani looming over and old and frail Trump who was bending the knee to the Democratic Socialist and blowing up the GOPโ€™s midterm election strategy.
