The Final Showdown Is Coming For Kevin McCarthy

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made a deal that saw him give up all of his independence and power to get the gavel, and the result has been one of the most dysfunctional House majorities of all time that has no interest in governing and a large bloc of the caucus whose sole purpose appears to be impeaching President Biden.

With the government facing a shutdown in a couple of weeks, McCarthy has been pushing for a short-term continuing resolution to avoid a shutdown. A short continuing resolution could pass the House with a combination of McCarthy loyalists and Democratic votes, but those who gave the Speaker the gavel say that if he works with Democrats to keep the government funded, they will file a motion to vacate that will lead to Kevin McCarthy’s ouster.

CNN reported:

While Gaetz has been the face of the McCarthy resistance, at least a half dozen other GOP members told CNN they are open to supporting a motion to vacate the Speaker’s chair if it comes to the floor – putting the effort on the brink of passage, an effort that has never succeeded before in the history of the chamber.

And in a sign of the seriousness of the situation, the topic has also come up in recent House Freedom Caucus meetings, according to GOP sources, with some members feeling like McCarthy violated his terms to become Speaker. If all Democrats support the move, as many of them are signaling they would, it would take just five Republicans to succeed, thrusting the House into chaos. At that point, the House would be paralyzed until a new speaker is elected.

It is that last part that deserves our attention. Democrats are signaling that they would support a motion to vacate that will cost McCarthy his job.
