Trump Committed Crimes Against America

The one commonality in three of the four indictments against Donald Trump is that they involve crimes against the United States of America.

As Judge J. Michael Luttig said on Tuesday, “If there's one thing that I could tell the country today it would be that the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election was not and is not politics. This is, as we now know from the indictments of the former president by the Department of Justice and Jack Smith, these were grave crimes against the United States of America, perhaps almost as grave as would have been treason.”

Trump crossed a line after he lost the presidential election that had never been crossed before by a president who had been rejected by the voters. Trump tried to illegally maintain power.

Lawyers spend hours and hours each day on cable news talking about the twists and turns of each case against Trump, but it isn’t that complicated from a political science point of view.

Donald Trump tried to end the system of governance in the United States that has its philosophical foundations in the Enlightenment and the writings of political theorist and philosopher John Locke.

It could be argued that when Trump tried to destroy American democracy, he committed a crime against the world. The end of US democracy could be a crippling blow to global freedom.

However, when Trump allegedly committed his crimes a chase began.
