When Russia invaded Ukraine, President Joe Biden had many options. Biden could have rested on the Cold War-era policy of containment as a primary option where the motive would have been to provide US aid to assist Ukraine to contain potential Russian aggression.
Biden could have launched a diplomatic effort, and not committed US resources to helping Ukraine.
The President could have done nothing and deemed the situation in Ukraine not vital to US interests. Within the main policy options, there were endless possibilities for mixing and matching different strategies.
It was a fourth option that Biden chose that both caught Putin by surprise and put the wheels in motion for the current crisis that is unfolding in Russia.
