Joe Biden And The House
Vote counting is still going on in House races around the country, especially in California, but former speaker Nancy Pelosi said something interesting in an interview with The New York Times that is worth discussing.
Pelosi was asked if she thought that President Biden should exited the race sooner, and this was her answer:
No. The president made his own decision to step aside and to endorse Kamala Harris. He made a patriotic, selfless decision, for which we are all very grateful. I think that was one of the reasons we were able to save so many House seats. So I thank him for that. I had no reason to earlier say anything to the president. I wish that they had in the first two years of the president’s term been more out there about what we had accomplished. The rescue-package money in people’s pockets. Shots in their arms. People back to work. Children safely back to school. The Biden child-tax credit. All those things. There could have been more of a presentation of that. I was not asking the president to step aside. What I was asking the president to do is to have the campaign be more clear.
In total honesty, the lack of clarity caused a problem for the Harris campaign. The Vice President had policies, but she didn’t have the time to refine and develop a clear and easy-to-understand message on the economy. Campaigns usually have years to refine their message. Harris didn’t have four months, so on this point, I think the same lack of an easy-to-communicate message on the economy that was a problem for Biden transferred to Harris.
The point about House races is what is most interesting. A segment of the pundit class blames Biden for the loss, but by getting out of the race and making the unprecedented decision that he did, the President saved House seats.
Democrats could have been in a much worse position than they are today.
Imagine Speaker Mike Johnson with a 20 or 30-seat House majority.
The Affordable Care Act would be gone. A national abortion ban would be in legislative form. Current retirees don’t have to worry about their Social Security and Medicare, but if Johnson had a big enough majority, the programs would be gone for future generations.
At best, Republicans will have a four-seat majority in the House. At worst, Democrats will win the House or come up just a seat short.
With his selfless decision, Joe Biden kept Democrats in a position to flip the House, and that is a piece of very good news.
Democrats Kept Key Senate Seats
The other nightmare scenario for Democrats would have been if the roof completely caved in on US Senate Democrats. Republicans are still nowhere near having 60 votes in the Senate because of victories in Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, and likely Arizona.
