Jamie Raskin Demands Investigation Into The Unlawful Detention Of Sen. Alex Padilla

House Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) is demanding a full investigation into the unlawful detention of Sen. Alex Padilla.

As the abuses of power against elected officials mount, Democrats should not let the assault and unlawful detention of Sen. Alex Padilla, as with the mistreatment of judges and elected officials, be swept under the rug.

Treating these abuses of power like just another news story promotes the normalization of the behavior from the Executive Branch.

House Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) isn’t allowing what happened to Sen. Alex Padilla to be moved on from.

Raskin wrote in part to FBI Director Kash Patel:

This Administration has much to answer for. It has sent masked agents in unmarked vans to disappear people from American streets, it has violated the rights of the people of the United States to free speech and due process, it has spirited people away to the torture prisons of foreign dictators, and it has defied the orders of judges. This assault on Senator Padilla, captured on video and broadcast worldwide, is another vivid episode of authoritarian tactics and brute force being used to crush oversight and critical questioning—including from sitting Members of Congress exercising their constitutional duty.

I write to demand that you immediately provide answers and conduct an investigation into the FBI’s role in this disgraceful and indefensible assault of a Member of Congress.

The mainstream media has tried to both sides the assault of a US Senator. Many of the interviews with Sen. Padilla including one that MSNBC’s Ari Melber participated in asked the questions as if the violations of Padilla’s constitutional rights and First Amendment rights were debatable both sides questions.

The video of the incident makes it clear that there is not much to debate. Sen. Padilla was lawfully present at a press conference. He identified himself, attempted to ask a question, and then was assaulted and detained by federal law enforcement.
