Election Day Isn’t What It Used To Be
Election days in the United States have become increasingly tense. The press talks about polarization as if it was something new, but at the presidential level, there has not been a double-digit victory in the popular vote since 1996. Obama’s victory was considered sweeping in 2008, but he only won the popular vote by 7.2%. To find a presidential election that was decided by more than ten points, you have to back to 1996 and Bill Clinton’s wipeout of Bob Dole.
