Why Groceries Matter In This Election
Not since George H.W. Bush took a trip to the grocery store during the 1992 presidential campaign have groceries came up so often in an election.
While groceries themselves aren’t an issue, they have become political shorthand in this election for how voters feel about the state of the nation.
Here is something the pundit class doesn’t want you to know.
The answers to simple questions often determine presidential elections.
Do voters like the personality of one candidate more than another?
Do voters feel emotionally connected to and heard by the candidates?
Thursday was the first time both candidates were asked the same question on the same day, and voters got to compare their responses.
The comparison between the two candidates was illuminating, not because of policies, but because one campaign gets what grocery prices mean to voters.
How The Candidates Answered Questions On Grocery Prices
Donald Trump was asked what he would do to lower grocery prices at a campaign town hall in Wisconsin, and he answered, “It's probably the question I get most. They say you vote with your stomach. It's true. Groceries, food has gone up at levels that nobody has ever seen before. 50, 60, 70%. Take a look at bacon and some of these products. Some people don't eat bacon anymore. We are going to get energy prices down. This was caused by their horrible energy. Wind. They want wind all over the place. When it doesn't blow, we have a problem. This was caused by energy. This was caused by energy and also their unbelievable spending. Out of wealth. They are taking wealth away. It was caused by energy. What they've done is started cutting way back.”
