One of the loose threads of 2024 politics that never quite added up was the fate of the House Ethics Committee’s report on former Rep./former Trump attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz. Former Rep. Gaetz abruptly resigned from office as the House Ethics Committee was about to release their report detailing their findings on Gaetz’s drug use and potential sex trafficking.
After Trump nominated Gaetz to be attorney general, Speaker Mike Johnson took the unprecedented step of pressuring the committee not to release the report.
Gaetz’s nomination quickly collapsed, and he withdrew his name from consideration, but all of this left the ethics report up in the air.
The Ethics Committee would only say that no decision has been reached, but a decision was secretly reached.
After the House is done with all of its votes, the House Ethics Committee will publicly release its report.
The House Ethics Committee secretly voted earlier this month to release its report into the conduct of former Rep. Matt Gaetz before the end of this Congress, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the matter.
The report is now expected to be made public after the House’s final day of votes this year as lawmakers leave Washington for the holidays, those sources said.
The vote, which has not previously been reported, amounts to a stark reversal for the panel after it had voted along party lines in late November not to release the results of the investigation. The decision to release the report suggests that some Republicans ultimately decided to side with Democrats on the matter, and it is unclear if the committee will once again change course now that it has voted.
The House Ethics Committee is different from any other committee in Congress. It is by structure non-partisan. The committee is equally split between Republicans and Democrats and members are chosen for the committee based on their character.
