House Republicans Subpoena Tim Walz

In the modern era, which we could generously consider the time of Bill Clinton’s administration in the 1990s, there have been some dubious Republican abuses of power in the House. The Clinton impeachment is considered by many to be a baseless partisan stunt that was demeaning of the impeachment process. There was also the Benghazi investigation, which just so happened to kick into gear when Hillary Clinton was running for president in 2016, but it would be difficult to find a House majority that has abused its power for partisan political activity as much as the current House majority.

Whether it was the Hunter Biden investigation, the road to nowhere that was the Joe Biden impeachment probe, or more recently, the investigation of Kamala Harris and immigration, House Republicans have been shameless in their willingness to abuse power to attack the Democrats running for president.

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) may have outdone them all with her subpoena of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

From the subpoena cover letter:

The U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce (Committee) is engaged in ongoing oversight of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) and the Minnesota Department of Education’s (MDE) administration of federal child nutrition programs (FCNP) and Feeding Our Future (FOF). As the chief executive and the highest ranking official in the state of Minnesota, you are responsible for the MDE and its administration of FCNPs. Article V Section 3 of the Constitution of the State of Minnesota which lays out the powers and duties of the governor, states in part that the governor “may require the opinion in writing of the principal officer in each of the executive departments upon any subject relating to his duties,” and “he shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed.”

Copies of our letters to the MDE were sent to you for your awareness of our oversight of the USDA’s and the MDE’s administration of the FCNP and oversight of FOF. You are well aware of the multi-million-dollar fraud that has occurred under your tenure as Governor.4 1 Federal Child Nutrition Programs are collectively the Child and Adult Care Food Program and the Summer Food Service Program.

Rep. Foxx isn’t subtle, so it is easy to see where this is going.

However, the Republicans left out some critical facts.
