The Biggest Mistake House Democrats Made In The Last Congress

In the Congress that is currently in its lame duck period, House Republicans did everything they could to lose the majority. They spent weeks unable to elect a Speaker of the House. Republicans expelled a member for corruption. House Republicans then fired their own speaker and spent weeks mowing through candidates until they finally settled on a nobody backbencher named Mike Johnson.

At the same time, the Republican majority wasted its time chasing nonsensical investigations and passed no legislation of consequences.

House Democrats mostly sat back and watched it all burn, except when it came to matters like avoiding default and keeping the government open. Democrats rode to the rescue over and over again. House Democrats saved the country.

Democrats even saved Speaker Mike Johnson’s job from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's attempt to oust him.

What was their reward for doing all of this?

Absolutely nothing.

Democrats thought they would be rewarded by voters for saving the country.

Instead, they find themselves narrowly back in the minority.

The biggest strategic mistake that House Democrats made was thinking that the American people would care that they were the adults doing the right thing.

Too many Democrats didn’t reward them by showing up to vote, and swing voters didn’t even notice what House Democrats did for the nation.

The good news is that House Democrats have learned.
