Negativity And American Politics
Research has shown that positivity is more effective in political campaigns. However, the political science research is divided. Negativity has also been shown to drive some voters to the polls but in a different way.
Voters who are voting for something tend to be the more consistently motivated group than those whose motivation is negative.
Negative messaging makes infrequent voters less likely to vote.
After Donald Trump won in 2016, Republicans completed their transformation which actually began after Barack Obama’s election in 2008 into a negative party.
Joe Scarborough called the Republican Party’s negativity a recipe for losing:
Scarborough said in part, “They don't talk about the future anymore. They talk about the past. They talk about resentment and in Florida they're talking about young girls menstrual cycles. They are whacked out of their heads and have no future in American politics unless they change course.”
When Republicans do talk about the future, it is paint America as a hellscape that can only be fixed by going back to the past.
Republicans have no positive vision for America, and we will discuss how that opens the door for Democrats to chart America’s future path below.
